The Practice of Danielle Putrow, PsyNP

My practice is limited to primarily children, teenagers, and young adults. I see patients aged 3-29 who are experiencing emotional or behavioral concerns that may require medication.

The first appointment is called a "psychiatric evaluation", or "psych eval" for short. It takes about an hour, and we cover a wide variety of topics: Developmental and Medical Issues, Family History, School/ Job Functioning, and Multiple Areas of Emotional Health.

At the end, I try to determine if a diagnosis is appropriate and if medication might be recommended. If we decide together that medication could be helpful, then I will prescribe the medications and see you often for follow-up assessments, called "medication management" or "med check" for short. Often, more information is needed from other places (family, school), and so any formal diagnosis is deferred until I can gather all of the needed information.

I can care for most people in this age group who need help, but I recommend that people experiencing serious mental illness (severe autism, history of multiple hospitalizations for psychiatric reasons) see a psychiatrist instead. Psychiatrists have more training than nurse practitioners in dealing with especially complicated and difficult diagnoses.
